British people don’t actually eat these foods!

There are lots of stereotypes about British food, and I don’t believe them all to be true!

In my opinion, the following foods aren’t eaten as often as people might think, though of course it depends on the person and the part of the country you’re in!

1. Scones 司康

In my experience, the average Brit eats a scone on a rare occasion. They might go on a nice country walk with their family or friends and have a ‘cream tea’ in a cafe (tea with scones), but it’s not something that’s generally eaten at home, and definitely not every week; probably not even every month! The foods you’ll see on the street and in shops in the UK aren’t representative of what Brits eat regularly, because most people cook for themselves at home. I’ll explain more about this in a future post!

Brief history of scones: they’re thought to have originated in Scotland in the early 1500s, and became a fashionable snack to eat with tea when Anna, Duchess of Bedford, coined the concept of ‘afternoon tea’ in the early 1800s.

How to eat: Scones should be cut in half, covered in a layer of jam and cream, and eaten with your hands! Ideally served with a pot of tea.

2. Fish and chips

Again, while it obviously depends on the person, I’ve found that most Brits I know eat fish and chips about once or twice a year, if that. Some people might order it more regularly, as it’s an easy, relatively affordable thing to eat when you can’t be bothered to cook. But the number of fish and chip shops you’ll see around, especially in seaside towns, isn’t an indication of how much this food is actually eaten!

Fun Fact: According to ukfisheries.net, 80% of people visit fish & chip shops at least once a year, and 22% of people visit fish & chip shops every week – I’m not sure I believe that statistic, but then again, like I said, it really depends on the person!

3. Afternoon tea

While afternoon tea includes the scones mentioned above, it wouldn’t be a proper afternoon tea without finger sandwiches too! Similar to above, afternoon tea is eaten very rarely by the average Brit, maybe once a year or less, just for a special occasion.

Fun Fact: You’ll find that many Brits have never had afternoon tea before!

4. Haggis

Another famous food from the UK, this one is very much a Scottish dish, and you’ll pretty much only find it in Scotland. It’s made of sheep’s heart, liver and lungs. Most English folk have never tried it before.

5. Cornish pasty

A cornish pasty is a pastry filled with different kinds of fillings. They date back to the 13th century, when they were eaten by the upper classes. In the 16th century, they became more commonly eaten, and by the 18th century, they were a staple food in Cornwall eaten by poorer working families.

Today, you’ll see the odd (= occasional) shop that sells pasties, and they’re sold in many bakeries, but it’s not like most Brits eat them all the time. Some people presumably love them and eat them regularly, or they wouldn’t be sold in Greggs, but I haven’t met those people myself!

What British foods are actually eaten often?

So do we eat any of our local food regularly? Yes!

1. Roast dinner

Traditionally eaten on Sundays, a roast dinner or ‘Sunday roast’ consists of roast meat (usually beef, chicken or lamb) and roast vegetables, served with gravy, and maybe yorkshire puddings and various condiments. It originated as a tradition during King Henry VII’s reign. At that time, most people couldn’t afford large cuts of meat, so roast dinner was considered extravagant.

There might be mixed opinions about this, as I know some people hardly ever have a roast, but many people I know continue to have a roast dinner most Sundays, or would order a roast when they go out to eat.

Fun Fact: You’ll see many blogs referring to yorkshire pudding as if it was its own meal – it’s not, it’s a puff pastry thing that’s served as an addition to roast dinner!

The traditional English breakfast, consisting of fried eggs, bacon, fried tomatoes, mushrooms, beans, sausages and toast (traditionally), isn’t eaten every week by most people, but is still generally popular, and many Brits eat it at least once a month.

Depending on the person, the frequency could vary from 3 times a week, to never!

Fun Fact: Fry-ups date back to the 13th century, and were originally only eaten by people of very high social class and great wealth!

3. Sandwiches 三明治

Sandwiches are a food you’ll see everywhere in shops in the UK, and are actually eaten regularly by a lot of people too! According to the Guardian, 56% of Brits have a sandwich every day, and the average citizen eats 20 sandwiches a month. This is probably because it’s a quick and easy lunch to have when you’re out and about, for example at work or studying.

Legend has it that in 1762, the 4th Earl of Sandwich invented the sandwich. He was playing cards and didn’t want to leave the table, so he simply put some roast beef between two slices of bread so that he could eat it with his hands.

The most popular fillings in the UK are ham salad, ham and cheese, cheese and onion, egg mayonaise and the traditional Ploughman’s sandwich. A ploughman’s lunch is a cold meal of bread, cheese and pickles, with extra things like ham, salad, boiled eggs or apple. This meal dates as far back as the 1300s, and only turned into sandwich form in around the 1950s.

Fun fact: A ‘meal deal’ is an offer that many supermarkets have in the UK: when you buy three items, such as a sandwich, a drink and a snack, it only costs around £3.50.

4. Pies

Pies are another classic food that could appear in your mum’s kitchen, in the pub, or in any other restaurant. ‘Pie’ normally means there’s a pastry lid on top, but you also get ‘fish pie’ and ‘shepherd’s pie’ that are topped with mashed potato. Pies became much more popular in the late 16th century during Elizabeth I’s reign.

Fun fact: People in the North East eat more pies than anywhere else in the UK.

5. Scotch egg

There are probably mixed opinions about this one, but I personally eat a scotch egg as a snack very regularly! It’s a boiled egg covered in sausage meat and breadcrumbs, which tastes better than it sounds!

Fun Fact: Scotch eggs aren’t Scottish – they were invented by William Scott in Yorkshire in the 19th century.

6. Crumpets

A crumpet is a small griddle unsweetened bread, not too dissimilar to a pancake, but more similar to bread in texture, with little holes in it. They originated in Wales as part of the Anglo-Saxon diet, and are now popular in the UK, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and Australia (according to Wikipedia). Crumpets are typically eaten as a snack with melted butter on top, and maybe Marmite or jam. They could also be eaten for breakfast, or any time of day really! Some people eat them daily or several times a week at home as a comfort food, while some people might never have them. Nonetheless, they’re worth adding to the list!

7. Marmite

Okay so this isn’t actually a British food, but most people think it is because it’s eaten so much in the UK. Marmite is a savoury spread made of yeast extract that was actually invented in Germany in 1902. You’ll find that many, many Brits enjoy Marmite on their toast.

8. Tea 茶

Not food, but very common! Brits drink on average 2.7 cups of tea a day, and I’m bringing the average up with my 5 cups a day…

Desserts 甜點

There’s so much talk about mains that I feel that desserts get woefully forgotten – they’re actually the best of British food in my opinion! I’m just going to stick some classics here for you to feast your eyes on.

Apple crumble

Sticky toffee pudding

Victoria sponge

Cheesecake

Trifle

Bakewell tart
