What’s the best way to improve your spoken English?
As a language learner myself, and having seen plenty of students either progress rapidly or stagnate in their speaking, I can wholeheartedly say that consistency is key when it comes to improving your speaking in another language. 🤓🔜🗣️
You need repetition, and lots of it. It’s the students who spend time outside of class going over the materials, watching English TV, listening to podcasts, or writing an English journal, that make the biggest progress.
If you’re lacking motivation, just make sure to do something.
Now of course, we have to find a balance here. While consistency is important, you don’t want to feel like you’re at bootcamp the whole time. If you’re lacking motivation, just make sure to do something. Putting some English music on in the background, or watching an episode of Friends will do. Usually, English needs to be something you find at least a little bit enjoyable, for any lasting benefits. And fun usually comes from variety and novelty.
Method #1 Passively listening to native speakers talk on a regular basis is a must-do, no matter what stage of language learning you’re at. By exposing yourself to the sounds of the language, your brain will naturally start to notice patterns and help you with a lot of your learning.
Method #2 Active recall. Plenty of studies have shown that retrieval practice, which means actively recalling something from memory, helps hugely with retaining the knowledge you’ve learnt*. If you just re-read or listen to something again, it’s far less likely that you’ll actually remember it. And remembering how to say things is one of the hardest but most important aspects of language learning.
Transcription practice helped me a lot when I was learning Chinese.
There are a number of tools and techniques that can help you recall English from memory: flashcard apps like Anki; online games like Wordshake or Knoword; an AI speech tool like ELSA Speak; or doing your own transcription.
Method #3 Put systems in place. Learning any skill requires patience, time and a robust system. Here are the main language learning systems you can put in place to ensure you don’t go off track:
Take language classes (Susie Woo can help you! Hey, it rhymes!)
參加語言課程(Susie Woo 可以幫助你!)Schedule time to use online resources (such as online English courses, YouTube, TV, podcasts, ELSA Speak - more on this below)
Immersion (go to a country where they speak English, or join English-speaking groups or communities that have regular meetings)
Hire a tutor (one-to-one classes with a qualified teacher can help iron out issues while focusing on your specific needs & goals)
I’ve created a series of language classes, tutors and online courses to help you with all of these.

You might have also noticed I’ve mentioned ELSA Speak a few times now. The ELSA Speak app comes highly recommended, as it uses the latest AI technology that listens to you speak, and gives you feedback about your pronunciation using percentage markers, so you can repeat until you get it right. It’s like an AI tutor that you can take around with you and use wherever you are. It also has games and community features to keep your English learning fun and interactive. The latest features include a course about Festivals Around the World, games like ‘unscrambling words’ and several English exam series to help you prepare for the IELTS or TOEIC exams.
Lastly, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Language learning can feel like an arduous process at times, and it takes on average 2 to 4 years to even be able to have a basic conversation in a new language! Remember to set realistic goals for yourself, reward yourself for progress, and don’t beat yourself up when you fall off the bandwagon, which you inevitably will. The great thing is that any progress you make tends to stay with you, so you can easily come back and relearn it quickly later.
Until next time!
